Robert Sternberg defines intelligence as "a mental activity directed toward purposive adaptation to, selection and shaping of real world environments relevant to one's life" (New World Encyclopedia). It seems that Sternberg views intelligence with a much higher standard that goes beyond adding and subtracting, but his definition touches the components of survival in every aspect of life.
